Riverton was incorporated in 1871 on the north bank of the Fox River, where the old rail depot still stands in what is now Depot Square. About 18,400 people live here today across four wards.
Form of government
Riverton operates under a council-manager form of government. Residents elect a Mayor and four Council members to four-year terms, staggered so that roughly half the seats are contested at each election. The Council sets policy and adopts the budget; day-to-day administration is handled by professional staff.

City Hall holiday closures
City Hall is closed on all federal holidays. Refuse collection slides one day later for the remainder of that week. Emergency services are unaffected.

The Council meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in Council Chambers at 100 Main Street.

Contact the City Clerk at least seven days before the meeting. Any resident may also speak during public comment without prior arrangement.
